What does the motto mean?

According to Beryl Gibbs, early in its history, the Jamaica Baptist Women's Federation (JBWF) adopted as its Motto Seek, Save, Serve. Then, the Motto referred to the JBWF’s interest in providing a “ Home” for homeless children. (Consequently, The Garland Hall Memorial Home was established.)

Seek

The absolutely neglected children and give them an opportunity to become industrious members of the world family.

Save

The children from their earliest infancy, from sickness of body mind and spirit.

Serve

The children by diligently training them in the way they should go.

According to Gibbs, these words of challenge and command were soon applied to all aspects of the JBWF activities. In recent years the motto has been put under the searchlight by persons in and outside of the church. Thus has become very troubling for many sisters in our branches across the island who cannot readily give an answer to the frequently asked question: What does the Motto mean?

The JBWF does not exist by itself or for itself. This auxiliary of women of God seeks to fulfill God's mission to God's people through the church. Consequently, Seek, Save, Serve still remain words of challenge and command. However, the motto means more than it did then. Primarily the motto reaffirms our missional understanding and mandate. It requires us to intentionally give witness to God's love for and interest in all of His creation within and beyond the local church community. Now the JBWF not only gives focus to the holistic development of children (Garland Hall) but it is also deeply concerned about the welfare and well being of adolescent girls and women of different ages and stages with different vulnerabilities as well as those affected by specific issues, (christian and non christian). All persons in situations that restrict, exploit, oppress and marginalise need to know about and experience the transformation that only God can bring to their lives.

What does the motto mean now?

Seek

Engage(Carry Jesus into the world around us; be beacons of hope to women, children and adolescent girls in our conversation with them. Be open and responsive. Share their moments of joy, pain, hurt and disappointments with a compassionate and caring spirit. Establish and build relationships (friendships) for the purpose of sharing the love of Christ.

Save

Evangelise (share the hope of the gospel). Point women, children and adolescent girls to Jesus Christ in order to share the gospel with confidence and boldness so that unsaved and unchurched women children and girls will hear God's voice and come to know His heart (Personal Witnessing, Prayer Walking, Open Air Meeting, Tract distribution, Home Visits, Bible Study and Prayer Meeting).

Serve

Enable (make deliberate effort to love, care for, support, counsel, train, mentor, coach, assist, equip, empower women, children and adolescent girls not only to tangibly meet some of their frequently expressed needs but also to grow, develop, and flourish so that their lives can be shaped in the image that God desires.
